Preparing for Emergencies

George had always been careful. But one afternoon, while reaching for a book on a high shelf, he lost his balance and fell. For a moment, he couldn’t get up—and he realized how quickly an ordinary day can turn into an emergency.

Thankfully, George wore a simple life alert button around his neck. With one press, help was on the way. Within minutes, he was speaking to someone who could send assistance and notify his family. That small device made all the difference.

After that experience, George made a few changes—simple steps that brought him peace of mind:

  • He added emergency contacts and medical information to his phone, making it easy for first responders to access.
  • He learned the warning signs of stroke and heart attack, knowing that acting quickly can save a life.
    • Stroke signs: sudden confusion, trouble speaking, facial drooping, or weakness on one side.
    • Heart concerns: chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, or discomfort in the upper body.
  • He spoke with his neighbor, Linda, and they agreed to check in on each other regularly and be available in case of emergency.
  • He kept pathways clear in his home and made sure important numbers were always within reach.

Emergencies can happen to anyone—but being prepared can make all the difference.

Taking a few simple steps today—like using a life alert system, setting up emergency contacts, staying aware of health warning signs, and building a support network—can help you stay safe, independent, and confident in your daily life.
